We have formulated this product to help Alopecia Areata sufferers with their hair loss.
Although the disease itself is non-life threatening, the cosmetic and psychological impact on both patients and parents is tremendous and may lead to a high lifetime prevalence rate of major depression and anxiety disorder.
Sometime after birth, we (alopecians) may be exposed to an insult. This insult may be a virus.
The end result is that the immune system attacks the areas surrounding the hair follicle in a case of mistaken identity (autoimmunity). The resultant inflammatory reaction affects the hair follicle and in order for the hair follicle to survive, it migrates to an area away from the inflammation. It then, simply switches its self off and rests waiting for the right time suitable and safe for the follicle to return back. The end result is, AA patches are formed.
Hair follicles are extremely robust and capable of taking a lot of punishment. In AA, despite the disruption by immune cells the hair follicles are capable of regeneration given the right conditions, even after many years of immune cell insult.
This is where the Calosol product is at it's best, encouraging the return voyage and the switch on to take place.
